Meal and Volunteer FAQs
Do I need to fill out any forms?
Yes. Please complete our volunteer form on our website.
Here’s the link: www.FeedingTheFostersinc.com/volunteer(http://www.FeedingTheFostersinc.com/volunteer)
How do I find the Sign Up Genius list?
This list can be found on our website at https://www.feedingthefostersinc.com/volunteer (https://www.feedingthefostersinc.com/volunteer) or by looking under “featured” on the FB group @feeding the fosters inc nonprofit. A great tip would be to copy the list for yourself and add it to your notes so you have it but please if you do that verify often that it has not changed as they are updated often.
How do I know which family to cook for?
You can choose a family based on location, number of people to feed, or you can reach out to Feeding the Fosters and we can tell you who hasn’t had a meal in a while.
Do I have to bring the meal hot?
No. The foster family can heat the meal but please let them know what the baking instructions or reheating instructions are. Also, please let them know ahead of time if it will need to be baked/warmed so they can keep their usual dinner time.
Do I have to deliver at dinner time?
No. You can work out the delivery time when you text the foster parent. Some foster parents work from home, others work specific times. You can even drop off tomorrow’s meal tonight with heating instructions if you communicate with the family. Just remember that we are trying to make it easier on them, gifting them with time.
Does it have to be homemade?
No, although homemade and healthy options are always appreciated, the children love a treat of restaurant bought meals, pizza, Chinese, Mexican, Greek food, etc. Also you can purchase rotisserie chicken and make the sides or make the protein and provide steamable sides, cut fruit, etc.
What are some of the favorite meals?
Tacos, Italian, enchiladas, pot pies, shepherd pies, casseroles, breakfast for dinner, etc. Some families have listed their favorite meals on their sign up genius.
How do I know if there are allergies or food dislikes?
Please check the sign up genius for food allergies or aversions. Some families asked for no fish, one child has a peanut allergy, etc.
When should I text the foster family?
As soon as you sign up on Sign Up Genius the family is notified that a meal will be provided. Therefore it’s nice to include in the Sign Up Genius what you are providing and a phone number should you need to be reached. We ask you to text the foster family at least 24 hours in advance to get a delivery location and set up a time for delivery.
Can I bring other foods/items?
Yes. You are welcome to add some breakfast or lunch foods, kid friendly snacks, or paper goods. Fruits and desserts are a favorite. Additionally, gift cards for groceries or fast food meals are appreciated if you can’t commit to future meals.
Do I have to cook regularly?
No. You can cook whenever you are able. Some volunteers like to cook once a month and others cook weekly on the same day which builds a beautiful bond with the family.
Can I get volunteer hours?
Yes. You can get hours for NJHS, NHS, CAS, BF, etc. Please sign up using the name of the person who is volunteering. Keep track of all hours spent shopping and cooking. Driving hours can not be counted as volunteering. We are happy to sign any forms necessary. Please take pics of your volunteering as time stamped proof if your counselors ever have questions.
Where can I donate non food items/baby toys etc?
You are welcome to post donations on this page if they are free, posted with a picture of items and pick up location. There are also foster closets that accept these donations. One close to us is @foster to foster which is located behind UHMC on 580 and Enterprise. Please look up their hours before dropping off.
