• Feeding the Fosters

Spotlight | Hooper Family

We have been spotlighting different foster families every week so our volunteers get to know them. This week we will introduce you to the Hooper family. They are located in Clearwater and have been fostering for over 2 years. Currently, Rachel and her husband have three children ages 3, 2 and 11 months. In addition to fostering, their daughter Zoe had a very significant heart defect. Rachel said, “Zoe was born 3 weeks early at only 4 lbs 9.5 oz. we went straight into the NICU where we spent 9 days. At about 7 months old her growth and eating was not where it should be, so we had to get a feeding tube put in. About two months later when she was almost 9 months old they decided that she needed open heart surgery to fix her AV Canal Defect and her Pulmonary Stenosis. The surgery was successful but we still stayed in the cardiac ICU for 8 days to monitor and make sure she was able to tolerate her feedings. Now finally at 11 months old she is learning how to roll over and sit up. Babies with heart conditions often don’t develop on a normal schedule, so now that her heart is repacked we are trying to make up for lost time. Thankfully she is doing really well now and we are excited to see her continue to heal and hit these milestones she missed!” This experience has opened Rachel’s heart to medical fosters as well.
